But who doesn’t know what personal development means? Well, don’t be shocked. Some people think it’s merely career development, taking new courses, learning new skills, or anything similar.
This could be a reason why most people never got the results they wanted from it. They didn’t really understand what it means. But that will not be you, especially because you are here now.
So, this quick introduction aims to clearly explain what personal development really means using iPhone as a case study.
Ready? Let’s dive into iPhone to make sense of what personal development really means.
The iPhone Analogy of Personal Development
The iPhone was first launched on 27 July 2007 with the iPhone 1 series and priced at $499 for the 4GB model. It had a 3.5-inch display, a 2-megapixel camera, and a multi-touch interface.
The first iPhone series had a lot of limitations, such as only connecting to 2G and 2.5G networks, a lack of smooth interaction/collaboration with other phones, no app store, and many other limitations, which I don’t want to bore you with.
Over time, Apple Inc. invested in more research and development to gather more knowledge and skills to upgrade the software and hardware.
Each year, Apple Inc came up with a new version of iPhone, and the most common thing is that these new versions had something different that makes each a better version than the former. Each version is built to surpass specific limitations, maximise its strengths and improve on its weaknesses.

As of when I wrote this post, iPhone 14, 15, and 16 series are among the most popular, expensive, and in-demand phones in the world. The journey from 2007 to 2025 and beyond is a typical example of personal development.
So What Is Personal Development In Simple Terms?
Personal development is simply the continuous effort to improve who you are. A personal effort put in place to become a better version of who you are on a daily basis.
Apple Inc is among the companies that understand the principles behind personal development. It’s something that works with time, patience, resilience, commitment, determination and most importantly, self-belief.
I remember when Steve Jobs, former CEO of Apple Inc, first introduced the iPhone. He said the phone is the smartest and will revolutionise mobile technology. That is not pride; it’s self-belief. Other companies that started that journey may share the same characteristics of being in the tech space for more than 10 years, but the difference is the thinking and development.
This same analogy could be likened to humans. For instance, ageing from 1-25 happens naturally. Growth in body mass could occur naturally, but personal development is a choice. It reflects on how you choose to engage with every aspect of your life—from business, relationships, and health, to emotions, skills, wisdom, intelligence, spirituality, inspiration, politics, career, and more.
Does it look like you can now explain what personal development means to a 5-year-old child? If the answer is yes, then you are in a better position to understand who needs it.
Who Needs Personal Development?
Personal development is a journey every human should embark on for themselves—this is why it’s often called self-development. As Rainer Maria Rilke puts it, “The only journey is the journey within.” No matter what stage you are in life, personal development is essential because it is the only journey that starts with you and serves you.
Everybody needs to move from one point to another. Could be graduating, finding a job, getting a partner or getting married, getting ready to retire, starting your own business etc. Self-development is needed for personal growth.
You’ve probably heard it before—the best investment in life is investing in yourself.
Personal or self-development brings about change, and change brings about growth. As Oprah Winfrey said:
“We can’t become what we need to be by remaining what we are.”
You weren’t born to stay the same. Personal development is the force behind your transformation from nothing to something, from a reader to a leader, from a loser to an achiever.
Understanding Five-Pillar Benefits of Personal Development
There are numerous benefits of personal development. However, I have chosen to capture some of them into five pillars.
- Increased self-awareness level: Everything begins with you. Understanding who you truly are is a fundamental aspect of personal development that unlocks every other door in life.
- Healthy habits and spirituality: Your habits shape your character, your character shapes your beliefs, and your beliefs shape your actions—your actions shape your life. Personal development helps you gain a deeper understanding of life and develop positive habits that support your growth.
- Achievement of SMART life goals: Whether you want to make more money, build a loving relationship, or maintain good health, these goals become achievable when you are intentional about them.
- Increased mental stability: Science has shown that mindfulness reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, leading to a better quality of life. Personal development equips you with the skills to overcome limiting beliefs and boosts your confidence to handle life’s challenges.
- Living the desired life: If you’re reading this, you’re alive and breathing—but are you truly living? While some people are living their best lives, others are merely existing. Personal development is the key to unlocking the life you truly desire.
A very significant starting point to benefit from personal development is asking yourself some critical questions, such as:
- Where am I now?
- Where do I want to be?
- And how do I get there?
The answers you get in this journey will be remarkable if you are truthful and kind to yourself in the process.
